Some SEO Marketing Tactics For Your Small Business
While during a recession, the time is particularly worse for those who own small businesses. During this period, numerous businesses try to cut back on as much as possible, but when does cutting back start to hurt the company? One of the places this question is most often applied is to the question of SEO. Why should a small business continue to pay for SEO when money is limited?
Unfortunately, many small businesses remove their advertising budget first. While this can be a good place to save a little bit of money, if businesses completely trim their advertising, they will not be able to attract new clients. Without more customers, there’s not much else they can do to make more money.
Web marketing is always cost-effective than doing other kinds of marketing, a budget is still required. Web marketing normally yield a much higher return on your investment since you’re able to study how well your marketing is doing. Many websites allow users to keep track where their visitors comes from, it’s easier to distinguish and cut any online marketing that is apparently not working. To this end, small businesses should not straightaway altered their SEO budget when times get tough.
It could be likely that a lot of small businesses may not even know what is SEO yet, and these businesses could be asking why they should spend the money? Those small business owners may not have recognized just how good a return they can get on their SEO. A huge return on investment is important in a recession, and as a fact doing SEO is ranked as one of the highest ROI alternatives.
By selecting specific keywords and phrases, you’re very specifically targeting your visitors. While ads in magazines may get a lot of attention, but you never really know if your target audience is viewing the ad or if it is just being viewed by anyone who will never buy your product. SEO, however, makes certain your website is being viewed by those who are looking for what you offer. The distinction is that it brings in more than just quantity- it brings in quality visitors and gives them information about your website right away.
When it comes to considering about SEO, small businesses have only a few options. They can either handle the SEO themselves or they can hire an SEO expert. The first is obviously the most budget-friendly; however, if you or your team members don’t know the basics of doing SEO, you may wind up wasting your time.
Getting someone with SEO knowledge to thoroughly redesign your website from the ground up to be fully optimized may be not be the ideal thing to do. A lot of small businesses basically can’t afford this. However, having an expert in SEO to look at your pages or do only part of the SEO process can be helpful.

The link between backlinks and Google authority
Hmmmm, this is a big subject and I need to emphasise it’s not clear cut. But here is what I have learned in my research at the Backlinks clinic:
Authority – simplified
The more authority your site has the higher you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your content. The good news is that authorities trusted by people are also recognised as trustworthy by Google. A good illustration is the .edu and .gov domain extensions. These suffixes imply they are trustworthy sources of content and it’s a proven fact that in the eyes of Google backlinks from these web addresses to your web pages will “pass on” authority to your site. Another good example is Wikipedia as the entries here are mostly added by by group of humans as opposed to a single source.
So it follows that authority is largely influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative web pages link to your site then you inherit their influence and in the eyes of Google you become more authoritative and hence the trust in your web pages by Google goes up.
How Google pronounces what is and isn’t authoritative is confidential for good reason and falls in line with Google’s philosophy of “Do no evil”. The last thing the net needs is someone exploiting the methods that Google employs in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological development of this period in history.
Backlinking methods you should avoid
In the same vein it’s worth my while stating some ‘black hat sources and practices of acquiring backlinks that Google not only disapproves of but appears to be acting to ‘classify’ as negative authorities. In no particular order of merit, the common examples are:
- Paid backlinks – hubs where people purchase and sell backlinks
- Comment spam – entries that contain links on web pages that are just not related to the main theme.
- Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or copied
- Unnatural growth – there are a myriad of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t dumb. Any sudden increase in the amount of backlinks is going to register on Google’s radar, especially if it’s a brand new domain.
- Backlinks from bad reputation web pages – these are particularly destructive as you are guilty by association – need I say more.
*There is another factor where I may be on shakey ground, but reputable media properties seem to get a lot of authority and I have definitely discovered significant numbers of the same content over and over again on different portals with no penalties, I am still monitoring this, only as some of the results I am seeing defy the consistent behaviors I normally expect to see. More on this is in a future article….
